For months we've heard trade chatter around Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson and Max Pacioretty - and now that the latter was moved in a monster transaction to the Vegas Golden Knights in the middle of the night early Monday morning, it seems just natural that all of the focus is now turned on the all-star defenseman.

NHL insider Darren Dreger was a special guest on Thursday’s edition of Leafs Lunch on Toronto’s TSN 1050 and revealed some interesting information on what has been taking place in the Karlsson saga in the recent weeks, according to Chris Nichols. It is believed that one substantial offer was made to land the services of the Senators best player.

“I know one of the teams involved made a pretty substantial offer, I would say several weeks or so ago, and I’m told that there were six elements to it. So you’re talking about at least a couple of roster players, at least a couple of prospects, and at least a couple of draft picks. Now, some of that is conditional on whether Erik Karlsson would sign with that team."

On Monday, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun added heat to the chatter by revealing that other teams had entered the mix. And let's not think that the Golden Knights are out of the running in the Karlsson sweepstakes, however, there might be more competition for the veteran blue liner.

“At first I’m wondering does that close the door on an Erik Karksson trade to Las Vegas,” said LeBrun. “But what I’m being told is don’t be too quick to say that. And I think Vegas will certainly keep the lines of communication open with Ottawa. They’ve been after we know since the trade deadline, when they almost got him.

“But I think if the price is right, that Vegas is still in a position where they have cap space, where they have other prospects, where they have other assets that could entice the Ottawa Senators. I don’t know if I’d make them a front-runner because there’s a lot of teams in those conversations with the Ottawa Senators, including a couple of new teams, I’m told that came on the radar last week. But nevertheless, I wouldn’t totally close the door on Vegas.

According to Cap Friendly, Karlsson is in the final season of his contract, which carries a $6.5 million cap hit and $7.5 million in actual salary. The Senators offered Karlsson an eight-year extension that sources say was north of $80 million over its lifetime, but the offer was not accepted. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2019 if he doesn’t have a contract extension in place.

Maybe one of these new suitors can convince GM Pierre Dorion to move Karlsson...
