The Colorado Avalanche did everything they could to get the better of the Vancouver Canucks, but ended up losing more than just the game on Tuesday night.

Daniel Sedin’s game-tying goal in the third period led the way for Sven Baertschi’s overtime goal as the Canucks won the game 4-3. However, the most concerning thing that occurred in the contest is leading scorer Nathan MacKinnon, who left in the second period with an apparent shoulder injury.

MacKinnon was hurt after taking a hit in the corner from Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler. His helmet popped off as a result of the collision and he skated slowly to his bench and appeared to be favouring his left shoulder. The young captain and likely Hart candidate was attended to by a trainer but headed quickly to the locker-room.

There was no word postgame on MacKinnon’s status.

However, losing the best player on your team for an extended period could be a devastating blow to the Avalanche’s playoff hopes. GM Joe Sakic would need to pull a rabbit out of his hat ahead of the trade deadline to help his club.
