For a while, we didn't hear about any trade chatter concerning Ottawa Senators captain and star defenseman Erik Karlsson. Now, it feels like it was in order to get us ready for the madness that is the latest trade rumour as NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet has just reported a new major turnaround in the situation.

It was started when Friedman announced on Wednesday that the Vancouver Canucks had entered the Karlsson sweepstakes in hopes of landing the star blue liner to fast forward the rebuilding process in British Colombia. While Canucks general manager Jim Benning attempted to deny the rumour, Andy Strickland of FOX Sports reported on Thursday that Karlsson does not want to sign an extension with a Canadian team.

Friedman felt the need to speak directly to the Sens captain, and got new information on his trade desires in this messy situation. On Friday, it was revealed that Karlsson, who spoke directly to Friedman, reached out to the NHL insider to state that it is not accurate that he is unwilling to sign long-term with a Canadian team.

While Friedman talked to him some more about the roller-coaster situation, Karlsson was only willing to make this one comment public.

When last of the trade chatter was heard on Karlsson, it was believed five to six teams, including the Vegas Golden Knights, Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks, remain interested in Karlsson. Friedman added that he thinks the Stars, Sharks and Knights remain among the frontrunners in the Karlsson sweepstakes.

The Knights and Bolts have both been making a push for him since before last February’s deadline and they haven’t been deterred. It remains to be seen what the Canucks will be willing to offer.

When the rumour of a potential trade with Vancouver was made public, Canucks team insider Jeff Paterson noted that it was believed that the trade negotiations would surely start with Quinn Hughes and 2019 first pick that could be Jack Hughes. Many Canucks fans would also be upset to see Brock Boeser, Bo Horvat, Elias Pettersson, Jake Virtanen, Olli Juolevi, Thatcher Demko involved in any way in such a blockbuster trade.

The waiting game continues...
