Breaking: Filppula leaves Flyers, signs one year deal on UFA market

The veteran center is officially off the market.

The New York Islanders have signed unrestricted free agent forward Valtteri Filppula to a one year, $2.75 million contract.

The 34 year old Filppula scored 11 goals and 33 points in 81 games with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2018-19 and and an additional goal and three points in six playoff games. The Vantaa, Finland native has 168 goals and 463 points in 876 career games split between the Flyers, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Detroit Red Wings.

With superstar center John Tavares signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier today, the Islanders have a gaping hole at center ice and it's expected that Filppula will be one of the individuals tasked with making up for Tavares' absence.

The New York Islanders announced today that Valtteri Filppula has agreed to terms on a one-year contract.
Filppula, 34, scored 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 81 games with the Philadelphia Flyers last season. The Vantaa, Finland native added three points in six games during the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In 876 career NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia, Filppula has scored 463 points (168 goals, 295 assists). He totaled 82 points (25 goals, 57 assists) in 158 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, has played in three Stanley Cup Finals and won the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008.
Detroit drafted Filppula in the third round (95th overall) of the 2002 NHL Draft. He scored a career-high 66 points in 2011-12 with Detroit and posted a career-high 25 goals in 2013-14 with Tampa Bay.
On the international stage, Filppula won a bronze medal with Team Finland at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. He’s also represented his country at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and two World Championships (2012, 2017). He won bronze with Finland at the 2003 and 2004 World Junior Championships and also played with Finland at the 2002 World Under-18 Junior Championships.
Filppula played his first season in North America with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League in 2005-06. He’d played previously for Jokerit of Finland’s Liiga.
