The Calgary Flames and most of their fans held their breath on Sunday night when star goalie Mike Smith was unable to end the game against the New York Islanders, with just over a second to go. He needed help to get off the ice as he seemed to have injured his groin in a brutal manner.
However, there is finally some good news. Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan revealed on Tuesday morning that Smith's lower-body injury is not as bad as first feared. Although he is expected to be out of the lineup tonight against the Boston Bruins or Thursday night against the Nashville Predators, Smith is only now day to day with the injury.
The MRI revealed good news for Smith, who has been a key player in Calgary's success this season, posting a .921 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average in 47 games.
Let's hope his recovery goes according to plans and that the veteran netminder can be back in the fold as soon as this weekend. In the meantime, David Rittich is ready to take over in between the pipes.
