According to a report from Steve Gorton of the Columbus Dispatch former NHL defenseman James Wisniewski has been seriously hurt in a car accident near Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

Both Wisniewski and PGA golfer Bud Cauley have been hospitalized with serious injuries after the single car accident on Friday night. The PGA’s top ranked golfer, Justin Thomas, is a close friend of Cauley’s and reported that at Wisniewski had suffered broken ribs, while Cauley himself is in surgery to repair a collapsed lung, five broken ribs and a fractured lower left leg.

Wisniewski, who played 552 NHL games split between the Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets and Carolina Hurricanes, owns a home in Dublin and was reportedly taking in this weekend’s The Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. The 34 year old recently represented USA in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. In his last full season in the NHL with the Blue Jackets, Wisniewski managed an impressive eight goals and 29 points in just 56 games. The season prior he netted seven goals and 51 points in 75 games. Still, despite putting up top pairing level production, Wisniewski has been unable to catch on with an NHL team the past few seasons.

“It sucks. Both of those guys,” Thomas said, referring to Wisniewski and Cauley. “One of your best friends [in Cauley] in a car accident and there’s nothing you can do, and nothing he can do. But he’s doing a lot better. I talked to Kolby [Tullier], our trainer, briefly and he said [Cauley] was in good spirits [Saturday] morning. He was laughing and talking, but it hurt him to do both. So we tried not to ask him too many questions or make too many jokes.”

The cause of the crash is not yet being made public but the Dublin Police Department has classified the case as an “open crash investigation.” There were reportedly two other individuals in the vehicle and at least three of them were transported to a nearby hospital with “critical injuries.”

More information on this story to come, as it becomes public.
