According to a report from TSN analyst and NHL insider Darren Dreger, free agent goaltender Anton Khudobin has agreed to terms with the Dallas Stars on a new contract.

Anton Khudobin will sign with the Dallas Stars. Excellent pick up for the Stars.

No details yet on the deal, but Russian hockey insider Igor Eronko reports that Khudobin was not able to come to terms with the Boston Bruins and walked away from the team over just $50,000.

Anton Khudobin told @Boogaard_2  difference between his demands on a 2-year contract and what  Bruins  were offering was $150k. He tried to make some concessions, asked to add just $50k, but the team denied request, that’s why he most likely leaves

Ouch… I guess Bruins fans can blame the tight fisted Jeremy Jacobs for this development? The 32 year old Khudobin was one of the NHL’s best back up goalies last season, going 16-6-7 with a 2.56 goals against average and .913 save percentage. The native of Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan spelled Bruins starter Tuukka Rask for stretches during the season and was relied on to help the team through some tough stretches midway through the season. It’s safe to say that without Khudobin’s stellar play between the pipes, the Bruins don’t finish last season with as nearly as many points in the standings.

Dreger is now reporting that the deal will pay Khudobin $5 million over two seasons, coming in with a $2.5 million cap hit.

2 years and around $2.5 million per.

That seems like a reasonable price for a reasonable back up. Which, by the way, is exactly what the Bruins will be seeking now on the open market. Did Bruins general manager Don Sweeney completely miss out here? There are some quality backups on the market but the best of them, including Khudobin, have already been linked to other teams. Jonathan Bernier is expected to sign with the Detroit Red Wings later today, ditto for Cam Ward with the Detroit Red Wings and Carter Hutton with the Buffalo Sabres.

The Bruins have reportedly signed UFA goalie Jaroslav Halak:

Jaroslav Halak two years to BOS

Good deal, Bruins fans?
