Breaking: Leading scorer traded, refuses to play, gets suspended by team, and signs overseas

Very bizarre situation.

Here's one that went under the radar, not that surprisingly. Former Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks prospect Spencer Abbott had been traded from the San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks) to the Binghamton Devils (New Jersey Devils) in the AHL for future considerations.

What makes this trade weird is that Abbott was San Diego's leading scorer, and he was traded for essentially nothing in return. Abbott, clearly unhappy with the situation, refused to report to the Devils, never playing a single game.

He was suspended by the Devils without pay.

It was announced on Saturday that he signed with EHC Kloten of the National League in Swizerland.

Abbott, undrafted, played two games in the NHL, but posted top numbers in the AHL, with his best season occurring with the Toronto Marlies in 2013-14, posting 69 points in 64 games.
