The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they have sent a defenseman back to the Toronto Marlies.
Rinat Valiev was called up as an extra defenseman after Morgan Rielly was placed on injured reserve, but with the all-star game this weekend, hockey is on break for a few days.
As he wasn't playing and is waivers-exempt, there was no point in keeping him on board. He'll get some playing time back with the Marlies.
Don't discount the possibility of him being recalled following this weekend. That will depend entirely on whether or not Rielly and/or Zaitsev is ready to go post All-Star break.
Valiev was drafted in the 3rd round by the Leafs, 68th overall in 2014.
He has 8 points in 29 games for the Marlies this year.
Here's some highlights from his draft+1 year, in case you're not familiar with the skillset of Valiev.
