Earlier this month, multiple reports seemed to indicate that the Toronto Maple Leafs had hired former Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers executive Ricky Olczyk, brother of former Leafs fan favorite Ed Olcyzk.

Sportsnet analyst and Leafs insider John Shannon confirmed this news himself via social media:

Great to see the Maple Leafs add Ricky Olczyk.  The former Oiler and ‘Cane exec becomes the 2nd member of the family to be part of the franchise.

Well, today the Leafs made it official, also announcing that they’ve hired scout Blair MacKasey, as well.

Check it out:

The announced today that Ricky Olczyk and Blair MacKasey have been hired as pro scouts.

Ricky Olczyk serves as the Oilers’ assistant general manager from 2009 until 2014 before moving on to the Hurricanes organization to serve in the same capacity. He joined the Oilers’ hockey operations staff in 2007 originally as director of hockey administration and legal affairs, serving Edmonton’s liaison to the NHL regarding all matters pertaining to the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. With so much turnover in the Hurricanes organization this offseason, it looks like Olczyk made the wise decision to jump ship for the Leafs.

The Chicago, Illinois native is an accomplished NCAA defenseman, according to his Wikipedia bio:

A 1992 graduate of  Brown University Olczyk earned a law degree from Cornell Law School  in 1996. While at Brown, he played four seasons of Division I hockey and served as the Bears’ captain during his senior year. He played four seasons (1988 - 1992) of NCAA Division I hockey with the Brown Bears men’s ice hockey team, where he was named to the 1991-92 Academic All-Ivy Team. Olczyk also captained the United States Under-17 National Team that won the Silver Medal at the 1986 World Cup.

Of course, Ricky’s brother Eddie played four seasons with the Leafs in the late 80’s, early 90’s hitting the 40+ goal mark and 90+ point mark with the team. Eddie O, as he’s now known to most hockey fans, is of course one of the most beloved hockey broadcasters in the game and his colour commentary during NBC broadcasts of Chicago Blackhawks games is absolutely must see TV.
