According to a report from Sportsnet reporter and NHL insider Chris Johnston, the Winnipeg Jets have signed NCAA sniper C.J. Suess to a one-year, entry-level contract that begins next season.
Suess, who was born and grew up as C.J. Franklin but changed his name to reflect his mother’s maiden name, put up 22 goals and 43 points in 40 games with Minnesota State this season, earning himself Hobey Baker Award consideration as the NCAA’s top collegiate player for 2017-18.
As Johnston points out, Suess’ contract won’t kick in until the 2018-19 season so we won’t join the Jets until rookie training camp later this summer.
Blackhawks sign NCAA superstar Sikura
According to a report from Scott Powers of The Athletic the Chicago Blackhawks have signed NCAA superstar Dylan Sikura to an entry-level contract

Sikura is a former 6th round pick (178th overall) of the Hawks from the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, the native of Aurora, Ontario has had a stellar college career with Northeastern. The 22-year-old forward put up 22 goals and 54 points in just 35 games, following up on his remarkable 21 goal, 57 point season from a year ago.
DobberProspects.com’s Tony Carr projects the 6’0”, 165 lb Sikura to be a bottom-six forward in the NHL with some offensive upside. He’ll need to add some muscle and bulk to his 6 foot frame, but once he does he could become the Hawks’ next version of Andrew Shaw or David Bolland.
Oilers sign NCAA award winner Vesel
The Edmonton Oilers have announced that they’ve signed 2014 6th round pick Tyler Vesel to a professional tryout contract.
The 24 year old forward will join the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors for the remainder of the season on a tryout where he’ll get an opportunity to earn a full-time contract for the 2018-19 season.
The Duluth, MN native recently completed his senior season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha where he finished second in team scoring with 11 goals and 32 points in 36 games. The smooth skating winger won the NCAA’s Sportsmanship award in 2016-17 and is a graduate of the legendary Shattuck St. Mary’s Prep School program.
