A National Hockey League veteran is officially on the trading block.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the Winnipeg Jets have informed teams that 29-year-old forward Shawn Matthias has been made available for a trade.
Winnipeg sent out a note last week indicating Shawn Matthias’s availability. Their success has made it difficult for him to get into the lineup; just two appearances in five weeks.
The 47th overall pick at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft has only appeared in just 18 games for the Jets this season and has been limited to no goals and 2 assists over that stretch.
It's unclear at this time if there has been any interest in Matthias from the teams the Jets have contacted, but if there is it seems likely that the Jets would be asked to retain part of his $2,125,000 salary this season. Matthias will be an unrestricted free agent this summer so a trade for him would likely be a rental move.
