Breaking: Oilers sign NCAA award winner

A depth move? Or does this kid have a legit shot next season?

The Edmonton Oilers have announced that they’ve signed 2014 6th round pick Tyler Vesel to a professional tryout contract.

The 24 year old forward will join the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors for the remainder of the season on a tryout where he’ll get an opportunity to earn a full-time contract for the 2018-19 season.

The Duluth, MN native recently completed his senior season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha where he finished second in team scoring with 11 goals and 32 points in 36 games. The smooth skating winger won the NCAA’s Sportsmanship award in 2016-17 and is a graduate of the legendary Shattuck St. Mary’s Prep School program.

Did Caggiula just call out McLellan on social media?

Let’s be honest, not much has gone right for the Edmonton Oilers this season. As the losses pile up at least Oilers fans can take solace in the fact that it’s almost over. The disappointing squad has just 10 games left this season, where it looks like sophomore Drake Caggiula will get an audition alongside Leon Draisaitl on the team’s second line.

Caggiula, like a lot of Oilers this season, has had a relatively mediocre campaign. After putting up seven goals and 18 points in his rookie season, the 23 year old winger was expected to make a leap in production this season, but has managed just nine goals and 15 points.

At time there have been questions about whether or not he sees eye to eye with Oilers head coach Todd McLellan and, judging by his Twitter activity, those questions may now finally have an answer. Yesterday afternoon Oilers fan Jon Heemskerk tweeted out a meme that pokes fun at McLellan and his seemingly hard headed approach with Oilers rookie Jesse Puljujarvi

Check it out:

Funny stuff, right? Shortly afterward, Oilers Nation writer Tyler Yaremchuk uncovered the fact that Caggiula himself “Liked” this tweet.

Check it out:

Wooooooow… either Caggiula sides with the notion that McLellan has snubbed Puljujarvi all season or he doesn’t understand the meme at all.

One thing’s for sure, if the Connor McDavid heckling incident taught us anything it’s that the Edmonton media is going to have an absolute field day with this. Expect more to come.
