The Pittsburgh Penguins announced late last night that veteran forward Patric Hornqvist would not make the trip with the team to face the New Jersey Devils tonight, and most people logically awaited the recall of young forward Daniel Sprong from the WBS Penguins.
The organization officially announced this morning that they have recalled someone else in Sprong's place, effectively demonstrating that the promising forward is still in Mike Sullivan's proverbial dog house.
The good news for Penguins fans is that they will get to see Zach Aston-Reese make his NHL debut tonight against the Devils. Aston-Reese has compiled 29 points in 41 games so far this season in the AHL.
He was signed to an entry-level contract by the Penguins last season, after going undrafted.
There were mentions earlier this week of some friction between Sullivan and Sprong, in the sense that the head coach isn't happy with Sprong's lack of maturity and professionalism at the NHL level. His lack of consistency also didn't play well with Sullivan, and likely has something to do with Aston-Reese getting the call-up instead.
Stay tuned for tonight's game at 7pm ET.
