Breaking: Penguins sign goaltender to PTO on emergency-basis

The plot thickens.

It was announced earlier today that the Pittsburgh Penguins recalled goaltender Casey DeSmith yet again from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The news didn't come with another information, such as why they would call up a 3rd goaltender when there's seemingly been no indication of an injury or trade.

Fans on social media fear the worst already - that either Tristan Jarry was traded or Matt Murray was injured yet again.

We will hopefully hear more when practice starts at 4pm today.

The call-up of DeSmith along with the injury to Michael Leighton has forced the Penguins to sign a goalie to a professional tryout offer.

Adam Morrison has been signed to a PTO here before, with the last time occurring in similar circumstances. The WBS Penguins play tonight and with DeSmith gone, they need a backup for the night.

Morrison plays for the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL, which is another Penguins affiliate team. In his time there, he has a 5-7-0 record with a 3.03 goals against average.

The former 3rd round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers hasn't played a single game for the Penguins this season, despite the previous call-up.

Barring disaster, it's unlikely he starts any games in this stint either.

Stay tuned for more information regarding Murray and Jarry.
