Breaking: Pens make completely unexpected call-up from the AHL, trouble may be brewing in Pittsburgh

This is very bizarre.

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced this morning that they have recalled goaltender Casey DeSmith from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins

This is highly unusual news, especially when there has been absolutely no release of information in regards to either Tristan Jarry or Matt Murray.

No AHL demotions, no injuries, nothing. There's no evidence of injury in the Penguins' last game, and one would believe that if there had been one, that we would have heard about it by now.

One Twitter user might have some info, but given the source, it's pure conjecture at this point.

Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette appears skeptical, but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility. A quick survey of Twitter shows that most Penguins fans are fearing yet another injury to Murray, while others are wondering if there has finally been a trade.

Fans and media alike (including us) have clamored for a deal bringing in a third line centre, and perhaps this has something to do with that, although that too, is just speculation.

One thing is almost certain though - Jim Rutherford likely won't carry both Murray and Jarry down the road. At 23 and 22 respectively, they are both talented young goalies and it's very unrealistic that one of them plays second fiddle to the other for too long. Murray is Pittsburgh's guy, despite Jarry's generally inspired performances this season.

The Penguins practice at 4pm, at which point we will hopefully have more information for you.
