The Buffalo Sabres have announced that they’ve officially released rookie forward Alex Nylander to Team Sweden for the upcoming World Junior Championships in Buffalo, New York.
The 19-year-old brother of Toronto Maple Leafs sophomore William Nylander has gotten off to a slow start in his NHL career in comparison to his sibling. The younger Nylander has just a single assist in 4 NHL games with the Sabres, all from last season. He just two goals and six points in 15 games with the team’s AHL a affiliate the Rochester Americans this season.
By comparison, William was an above point-per-game player through parts of two seasons in the AHL before earning a call up to the Leafs. In 139 career NHL games, William has a respectable 34 goals and 97 points. It remains to be seen if his younger brother can come anywhere close to matching his production, but the former 8th overall picks, just two years apart, will forever be linked and compared fairly or unfairly.
