The Ottawa Senators officially announced a few minutes before noon that they have signed a defenseman to a contract extension.

Ben Harpur, drafted 108th overall in the 4th round of the 2013 NHL entry draft, has been awarded a two-year contract extension. The contract is a one-way deal, paying the same salary in both the NHL and AHL.

The cap hit is $725,000.

The 6'6" defenseman has 1 assist with the Senators this season, and 2 in his 31 career NHL games.

Only 23, the mammoth-sized defenseman still has room to grow and round out his game.

He's currently playing in the American Hockey League, but could see more NHL action before this season is up.
