A devastating loss for one NHL franchise.

A National Hockey League defenseman has just had his hopes dashed.

This past Saturday New York Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan suffered a serious injury to his "upper-body," when his Islanders defeated the Los Angeles Kings.

The injury, believed to be to de Haan's shoulder, was believed to be serious and there was even talk he could miss most of the regular season. However as the week has gone on the reports out of the Islanders camp were far more positive and it started to look more and more like de Haan would not be out nearly as long as initially expected.

Unfortunately a breaking news report from Islanders insider Arthur Staple has now revealed that the Islanders no longer have much optimism that de Haan will play again in the regular season.

Staple was asked how things had changed so drastically during the course of the week, and his response appeared to indicate that a recent exam has led to the belief that this is now a season ending injury.

de Haan is unquestionably one of the Islanders very best defensemen and while both Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy eat up more ice time than him on a nightly basis, his contribution on the penalty kill will be nearly irreplaceable for the Islanders moving forward.

Truly devastating news for that organization.
