According to a report from Russian hockey insider Igor Eronko, Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Philip Hom has signed a free agent contract with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
Philip Holm agreed to terms with Torpedo of the KHL
Holm, a 26 year old Swedish defenseman, was acquired by the Golden Knights from the Vancouver Canucks at the 2018 NHL Trade Deadline in exchange for forward Brendan Leipsic.
Yikes. Not a good look for McPhee on this one. Traded Brendan Leipsic for Philip Holm a few days before the deadline. Holm played one game with VAN (against VGK), never played with VGK. Now, he’s off to Russia.
Holm was originally signed by the Canucks to a one year, entry level contract last offseason, but managed to play just one game with the team during the 2017-18 season. Holm played 42 games with the Canucks’ AHL affiliate Utica Comets last season putting up an impressive 11 goals and 29 points. After being acquired by the Golden Knights Holm was immediately assigned to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, where he managed a further nine points in 21 games.
The terms or conditions of Holm’s new contract with Torpedo have not been announced, so there’s a chance that theoretically he could return to Vegas if his agreement has an NHL-out clause. But, given the Golden Knights’ logjam on defense and given where Holm is at this stage of his career, that seems unlikely.
If nothing else, this trade has to be seen as a huge win for Canucks general manager Jim Benning. Leipsic, who was acquired in exchange for Holm, scored three goals and nine points in just 14 games for the Canucks last season following the trade. Prior to that he had just two goals and 13 points in 44 games with the Golden Knights. The 24 year old native of Winnipeg, Manitoba seems to be a perfect fit on a young Canucks team and should factor into the team's top nine forward group for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
