The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has made a quick ruling.

Following an incident that took place on Tuesday night during a game between the Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders, the league has fined Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader $5,000, the maximum amount allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.

Abdelkader's fine comes from a spear he delivered to the groin of 25-year-old Islander's defenseman Scott Mayfield, a blow that was in retaliation to Mayfield knocking him down in front of the net.

Abdelkader was awarded just a two minute minor on the play, something that did not sit well with some who felt Abdelkader's blow had been delivered with an intent to injure.
