Despite reports late last month that former NHL defenseman Slava Voynov was planning a return North America, it now appears that Voynov will enter the 2018-19 season without a team. Period. Not in the NHL… not in the KHL. Not anywhere.

In late August, Russian hockey insider Aivis Kalnins confirmed a report that stated Voynov is eligible to return to the NHL, as per SKA Saint Petersburg deputy chairman Alexander Medvedev.

Check it out:

Deputy chairman of the SKA board of directors Alexander Medvedev announced this evening that Slava Voynov got permission to return to the NHL.

This report, however, was quickly refuted by NHL insider John Shannon of Sportsnet

Check it out:

NHL source says Slava Voynov has NOT been cleared to return to the NHL.

Now, a report from TSN 690’s Andrew Zadarnowski seems to indicate that none of that really matters as Voynov has reportedly injured his achilles heel.

Check it out:

Slava Voynov injured his achilles heel, and is out for at least a month resulting in no KHL team wanting to sign him for now according to Alexey Shevchenko of Sport-Express.

What we DO know is that Voynov was suspended indefinitely by the NHL and had his six year, $25 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings terminated back in 2015 when he was arrested in October, 2014 on domestic abuse charges. Voynov pleaded not guilt to the charges, but was eventually ordered to serve 90 days in prison and three years probation as part of a misdemeanor plea deal.

Check out this ugly description of the abuse, as described in court transcripts:

“…Varlamova told police Voynov punched, kicked, and choked her, and that her face was cut after Voynov pushed her into a flat-screen television. The officer also testified to seeing a laceration above Varlamova’s left eye, blood streaming, and red marks on her neck. Voynov’s attorney claimed that cops misunderstood Varlamova because she doesn’t speak English and maintained she “fell down.”

Despite this awful history, it’s believed that several NHL teams have shown interest in bringing the talented blue liner back to North America, but again this injury may put an end to all that.
