In case you missed last night’s Coach’s Corner segment on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, you missed yet another classic rant courtesy of legendary Canadian broadcaster Don Cherry.
For the full segment, watch the video below:
The most controversial bit of Grapes’ rant though came when he described Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Marc Andre Fleury as “cocky”. Here’s the full quote:
“This guy is so cocky. He’s making saves and playing it to the defenseman. He does this on purpose… that’s how cock he is! You gotta get a goal on him and tear the back of the net out as we used to say!”
Cocky… confident… tomato…. tomAHto.
While we won’t argue with Grapes’ assertion that Fleury is playing with swagger, we see it as a benefit to his team rather than a detriment.
The 33 year old netminder who was acquired by Vegas in the expansion draft from the Pittsburgh Penguins is having one of the most remarkable playoff runs in recent memory. And that’s saying a lot considering that Fleury is coming off back to back Stanley Cup championships with the Penguins.
In 15 post season games, Fleury has put up a 12-2-1 record, earned four shutouts and has posted a 1.68 goals against average and .947 save percentage. In short, he’s been incredible and he’s the early favorite to win the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP. If in fact Vegas can make history and win a Stanley Cup in their very first season, you can almost guarantee that Fleury will be named playoff MVP.
Before we get there though, Vegas will have their work cut out for them in what’s expected to be a hard fought series against either the Tampa Bay Lightning or Washington Capitals. The Lightning and the Capitals play Game 6, an elimination game for the Caps, of the Eastern Conference Final tonight in Washington, D.C. Interestingly enough however, Fleury has considerable experience against both squads, given his history with the Penguins.
In fact, Fleury almost single handedly eliminated the Capitals from the post season last year when starter Matt Murray went down with injury. Who can forget this CRAZY save on Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin from Game 7 of their second round series?
Crazy! Even crazier when you realize that Fleury has taken his game to a whole new level this season.
Oh and by the way… Vegas swept both season series’ against the Lightning and Capitals…
