The Los Angeles Kings have a huge contract to work out beginning July 1st. Star defenseman Drew Doughty becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, 2019, and the franchise's first chance to extend him begins exactly one year prior to that date.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, "the LA Kings think they'd be real fortunate to get him with something that says 11 million in front of it. So 11.5, 11.75, whatever it is. 12 million or less is going to be a bonus."
Doughty commented earlier in the season regarding his impending contract extension, and stated that he will seek full value on his next deal - meaning he won't take a hometown discount.
An $11 million+ deal is almost guaranteed to work for Doughty. While there may be teams such as the Toronto Maple Leafs that would be willing to match that offer, one would imagine Doughty wouldn't uproot his life from a city where he is happy to play in.
PK Subban's $9 million pales in comparison to what Doughty will likely sign for this summer.
