EA Sports puts Hurricanes on blast after brutal Skinner trade

Boom. Roasted! Can’t say that they’re wrong though!

In you somehow missed out on last week’s big trade between the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres, you missed a doozy. The Hurricanes traded Skinner to the Sabres in exchange for prospect Cliff Pu and a package of mid to late round picks.

Check it out:

TRADE CENTRE ALERT: #Sabres acquire F Jeff Skinner from Hurricanes in exchange for F Cliff Pu, 2019 second-round pick, and 2020 third- and sixth-round picks.

If that sounds like an underwhelming return for the Hurricanes to you, you’re not alone. Hurricanes fans took to social media and absolutely ripped the team for not getting a better return in exchange for Skinner. After all, Skinner is just one year removed from a career high 37 goal, 63 point campaign in 2016-17. The 26 year old former 7th overall pick is a high octane offensive player who has hit 30+ goals three times in his career and 20+ goals six times throughout his career. In total the speedy winger has 204 career goals in just 379 games. Not bad… you’d think the Hurricanes could get more for a top end sniper like Skinner.

The trade was so bad that EA Sports, makers of the wildly popular NHL series of video games, took to social media themselves to chip the Hurricanes.

Ouch. To make matters worse, one fan pointed out that not even the video game would make a trade that's so lopsided:

Double ouch.

One thing’s for sure… Hurricanes fans are NOT happy with this trade. Sure, Pu may end up turning into a decent NHL player and who knows what materializes out of the three picks the team acquired, but to expect a nearly 40 goal scorer like Skinner to come out of the deal is probably a bit unrealistic. In reality, the Hurricanes elected to cut bait with Skinner before they risked losing him for nothing in free agency next offseason. It may not be the best return they could get, but it sure beats losing an elite level scorer for nothing. Just ask a New York Islanders fan how that feels…
