Fans are overreacting to the latest Panarin “controversy”

What do you think? Are they right to be so livid?

Let's be honest, the Artemi Panarin trade chatter is a delicate and sensitive subject to all Columbus Blue Jackets fans out there... Many of them are reacting to something Panarin shared on social media, and it almost seems like the fan base is overreacting to it...

However, can you blame them?

The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline recentlyreported that Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen and his star forward met briefly to discuss terms of a new contract during holidays in Paris, France, but reportedly made “no progress.” According to the team insider, the 45-minute meeting has resulted in a strong ultimatum from the star player, who wants all business matters pushed aside as of Sept. 13.

Based on Panarin’s reluctance to sign a contract extension at this time and his unwillingness to talk contract after Sept. 13, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet believes the Blue Jackets are seriously looking at trading the Russian forward in the coming weeks. While Friedman won't guarantee a trade will take place, the Jackets are are serious about looking into it...

Now, Panarin's latest actions did not reassure Blue Jackets fans that a deal was still possible as he sparked more trade rumours with his latest Instagram video.

While the video appears inoffensive on the surface, some fans are questioning the uniform choice Panarin picked for his post. While the star forward is imply showing off his stick handling skills wearing a Russia jersey while in Russia, fans have been reacting to the jersey choice with intense statements in the comments section.

Here is a photo of some comments, offered by TSN's Bardown page.

Yeah, even what Panarin is wearing on his body during the offseason is causing a stir... But the facts remain the same: Panarin did give the Blue Jackets a deadline and ultimatum for all off-ice discussions, and so the clock is ticking.

It was also revealed on Friday by Friedman that the Toronto Maple Leafs might make a move on Panarin, which now could get fans going even more...

While the Leafs can’t afford to extend Panarin, Friedman wonders if they’ll take a shot with him for a year. The superstar forward could replace the newly departed James van Riemsdyk, who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers, however, Toronto probably cannot afford to keep him after that. The question remains what would be the Blue Jackets' asking price - would they go after William Nylander or Mitch Marner?

If Panarin insists upon the Sept. 13 deadline, the Blue Jackets could have less than two months to make their best trade, or at least the trade that helps them most in the short term, and it remains to be seen if the Maple Leafs are the right answer to Columbus' plans.

In the meantime, we sure hope fans will relax a bit about Panarin's decision and won't put too much heat on the Russian forward...
