Former NHLer Booth gets destroyed on social media for Nike/Kaepernick stance

Booth takes on NFL protests, 9/11 terrorism, transphobia and #MAGA. This is the world in 2018, people…

In case you missed it, late last night former NHLer David Booth ignited a firestorm of controversy online when he elected to wade into the current Nike protests sparked by the apparel company’s decision to feature former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in their most recent advertisements. For those who haven’t seen the ad or don’t understand what all the fuss is about, check it out:

Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. JustDoIt

The ad makes reference to Kaepernick’s anthem protests from last season in the NFL, which divided much of the NFL’s fanbase and extended out into the sports community at large.

Whatever your stance on Kaepernick, his silent protest or even Nike… you have to admit that this is a GENIUS marketing move from the athletic shoe giant. Thousands of people have taken to social media since the ad was unveiled earlier this week, either in support or in opposition to Nike and Kaepernick. In marketing speak they’ve created a buzz.

One of those in opposition to the ad’s sentiment is Booth. The former Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings forward took to social media and unleashed a bizarre tirade in which he equated Kaepernick with 9/11 terrorists.

Check it out:

“Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything” does this mean you can fly a plane into a building? How can so many people Nike be this ignorant as to the logical fallacy this entails. This is absolute absurd. I really don’t understand. Why would u support this?

Uh… what? Logical fallacy? How about the logical fallacy of equating a silent protest to the biggest terrorist attack in American history? Look, we’re not defending Nike or Kaepernick in any of this, as it appears as though they’re shamelessly using this controversy as a way to sell more running shoes, but let’s not mix things up entirely, Mr. Booth.

Unfortunately for Booth, he wouldn’t look much better as he attempted to explain himself.

It’s like telling your son they can become a girl even if there a boy. It’s that messed up

Wait… what? Who said anything about gender?

It gets even weirder…

Good night everyone. Thanks for the kind tweets. Let’s keep America great.  #MAGA

At least he took the high road? If you follow the thread from Booth’s original Tweet there aren’t many kind ones in there…

Ending off his tirade with the hashtag MAGA, short for Make America Great Again, didn’t help him out in a lot of people’s eyes, as well. Strange times we live in, people. Strange times, indeed.
