Veteran defenseman Mike Green has provided the Detroit Red Wings with a list of teams he would accept a move to, according to multiple reports. He is expected to be on the move today, prior to 3pmET.
Craig Custance of The Athletic reported on his Twitter account that the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning are two teams on Green’s wish list.
The veteran blue liner has missed several games as he is reportedly mending from an injury. Several teams have expressed interest, but some clubs have balked at the asking price, which includes a first-round draft pick.
Green could always return to the Capitals. For a while now, many National Hockey League fans have pictured Green going back to the Washington Capitals, as rumors of this potential move happening intensified at the All-Star game weekend, when reporters asked him and Caps captain Alex Ovechkin about this possibility. Ovi seemed more than pleased about the possibility of getting Green back in his lineup, however, the veteran defender did hint at his struggled he experienced with the Caps, mostly in link with several injuries.
“We still have a good relationship,” Ovechkin said after the All-Star Game. “He’s a great player. Very happy for him to make All-Star. I wish all the best to him and we’ll see what’s going to happen in the future.”
“Obviously his skill ability, skating ability, control the puck, is pretty high,” Ovechkin said. “It’s nice if he would be back in Washington, but I don’t know if it’s possible or not so we’ll see."
“I’ll be blatantly honest, sometimes things don’t go as well as you want them to and you can kind of get kicked down and you’re faced with adversity,” Green added. “I think that was great, honestly. I think it gave me an opportunity to grow and make me a better player.”
On the trade block as a rental, Green is in the last year of his contract, at a $6 million salary cap hit. However, the Red Wings and general manager Ken Holland have admitted that they are willing to eat a portion of his salary to get a deal done, and that will affect the return the Wings get.
In 56 games with the Red Wings this season, Green has tallied six goals and 23 assists for 29 points.
Another defenseman on the move
This morning, veteran defenseman Ian Cole was on the move again. After getting moved from the Penguins to the Senators, Cole ended up with the Columbus Blue Jackets for prospect winger Nick Moutrey and a third round pick in 2020.
There is also a major rumour that New York Rangers captain and star defenseman Ryan McDonagh will be on the move. The Rangers haven't played his star defender since Wednesday, but that was due to an upper body injury. Still, teams continue to check in on McDonagh before 3pmET today.
The Boston Bruins have been one of teams interested in acquiring McDonagh, and both teams have been involved in many recent trades. The Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs are also in the McDonagh sweepstakes, according to TSN's Darren Dreger and Elliotte Friedman.
Let's keep an eye on all this...
