In case you missed yesterday’s news, Stanley Cup winning head coach Barry Trotz has resigned from his position with the Washington Capitals effective immediately following unsuccessful contract renegotiations.

It was believed that Trotz' contract with the Capitals was set to expire on June 30th, but NHL insiders Elliotte Friedman and Pierre LeBrun uncovered the fact that Trotz actually had an option for two additional years on his agreement. The clause reportedly enabled Trotz with the option to sign a two year extension with the team should he win the Stanley Cup. That of course is exactly what happened. That extension is believed to have come with a $300,000 annual raise, but given how much coaching contracts have skyrocketed in recent seasons, Trotz believes that his value is greater on the open market and thus he resigned his position to explore other opportunities.

Frankly, it’s a stunning development given that Trotz helped the Capitals capture their first Stanley Cup in franchise history less than two weeks ago. While there were rumors that Trotz may be on the way out earlier this season, it was felt that a Stanley Cup championship remedied all that.  Apparently not…

So… what’s next for the veteran head coach? The only other team with a coaching vacancy in the NHL is the New York Islanders, a team very much in transition. Besides all the drama and daily “will he or won’t he” scenarios playing out with captain John Tavares, the team has a brand new general manager in Lou Lamoriello, as well. Trotz wouldn’t want to wade into a messy situation with the Islanders, would he? Don’t be so surprised…

According to a fan report, Trotz was seen travelling in Newark, New Jersey yesterday… which is awfully close to the Islanders’ front office headquarters. Capitals insider Isabelle Khurshudyan connects the dots…

Interesting. It’s also worth noting that Lamoriello still has a home in New Jersey…

Whether or not this means anything is anyone’s guess, but with the Islanders in desperate need of a quality coach and with Trotz name on the market, there’s bound to be speculation. Throw in the suspicious circumstances surrounding Trotz resignation and the fact that Lamoriello is lurking in the shadows and it’s tough not to get carried away by a story like this. Lou has that effect on things…
