Leafs’ Raptors-like third jersey design coming in 2018-19?

What do you think? Would you consider buying one of these Drake inspired jerseys?

In case you missed it, Canucks Army graphic designer S7Dsn created quite a buzz on social media yesterday afternoon when he released a concept jersey for the Toronto Maple Leafs based on the OVO City Edition uniforms worn by the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.

For those unfamiliar with the look, it was designed by Toronto based hip hop artist Drake’s clothing and apparel company OVO (October’s Very Own). Here’s the Raptors sporting the new look when they unveiled them back in January:

The black and gold with the iconic “NORTH” chevron is a stark, contrasting look for the Raptors… but how would it look on the ice?

What do you think? Pass or fail? Personally, I love the colours, but I’m not sure on the design… I’m also not sure that I like ANY of the Original Six teams getting a re-design, ESPECIALLY a team with the Leafs’ heritage and tradition. The Leafs and blue and white. That’s it. Period.

While the vintage Toronto St. Pats uniforms are cool to trot out once or twice a season, they’re truly a part of the team’s heritage.

Still… S7Dsn’s design is generating a lot of buzz online, to the point where people are beginning to petition the Leafs to officially use it next season as a third jersey. It remains to be seen whether this idea gains any traction, or if the Leafs acknowledge the movement at all, but at the very least you have to admire these fans’ dedication and commitment to what is essentially a made up concert jersey.

So, what are the chances that the Leafs actually adopt this look as a de-facto third jersey? The fact of that matter is that the Leafs are VERY brand conscious and are unlikely to suit up in anything other than their Original Six look for 2018-19 and beyond. Still, that won’t prevent more adventurous fans from hoping and wishing for something new and fresh. You can also never discount the impact that money has. If people 'put their money where their mouth is' so to speak, the Leafs could be forced into action.
