The defending champions Pittsburgh Penguins are on the verge of once again advancing out of the first round of the playoffs after their latest win Wednesday night over the Philadelphia Flyers by the final score of 5-0 at Wells Fargo Center to take a 3-1 series lead. It was the third lopsided Pittsburgh win in four games, the Philly only managed to score more than one goal in their 5-1 victory on the road in Game 2. During the entire series, the Penguins have outscored Philadelphia 17-1 in the other three contests.
Five of these goals have been scored by superstar player Sidney Crosby. With his goal in the second period of Wednesday’s Game 4, the Penguins captain passed Mario Lemieux to move into sole possession of first place on the franchise’s all-time playoff points list. Crosby now has 173 points (62 goals, 111 assists) and counting in 152 career post-season games, while Lemieux finished his Hall of Fame career with 172 points (76 goals, 96 assists) in a mere 107 playoff games.
After the victory, Crosby's teammate Evegni Malkin held an interview on the Pens' game and the Russian forward hinted at a rivalry with his own captain when asked about Sid's surpassing Mario Lemieux on the franchise's all-time scoring list. Malkin had one simple answer to it:
"I'm close. I'm coming too. "
The funny thing is that Crosby tied Lemieux with an assist on a Malkin goal that opened the scoring Wednesday. Malkin is however right: he is not too far behind Crosby, as it currently stands. The famous number 71 recorded two points through two periods to bring his total to 162 points in 153 playoff games with the Penguins. Just 10 points behind his long-time teammate.
The Penguins fan base should not worry about Malkin's rivalry towards his captain, as the dynamic duo's offensive boost is what has led the Penguins to three Stanley Cups in the past nine seasons. The Russian forward also had great things to say about Crosby following the contest last night.
"If you want to talk to him 1-on-1, he's always listens to you, tries to help you. An amazing guy for sure.”
So, just a healthy competition between the two star players.
