Boston Bruins forward Matt Beleskey was officially placed on waivers by his team today, even though he signed a five-year, 19-million dollar contract on July 1st, 2015.
It may seem odd more than two years later, but the 29-year-old forward was one of the most sought-after free agents back then. There were many general managers who were hoping to sign him, and Marc Bergevin was one of them.
As TSN's Darren Dreger said on Twitter today, the Habs came close to sign Beleskey but didn't want to offer him a five-year contract:
Phew. Would you imagine if the Canadiens would have to pay $3.8 million per year for someone who was sent down to the AHL? Beleskey amassed eight points in 49 games last year, and wasn't able to record a single point in 14 games this season.
Let's just say the Habs have dodged a bullet here!
