A truly touching tribute. Incredibly classy gesture by an incredibly classy player.

When Toronto Marlies goaltender Garret Sparks takes to the ice at Ricoh Coliseum for Game 1 of the AHL’s Eastern Conference Final against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday afternoon, he’ll do so sporting some new gear.

The fashion forward goaltender is known for repping some of the most striking looking gear in all of hockey. I mean… just check out these pads:

A direct nod to former Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Trevor Kidd? You bet.

Not to mention his awesome  Curtis Joseph inspired mask:

CUUUUUUUJO! How cool is that? Even cooler, Sparks will pay tribute to deceased Humboldt Broncos goaltender Parker Tobin on the backplate of his mask starting this weekend.

Check out the new custom paint job Sparks had commissioned to pay tribute to Tobin:

The quote from legendary goalie mask artist Sylvie Marsolais:

Great goalie and person Garret Sparks included a tribute to fellow goaltender Parker Tobin, who died in the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash, on the back of his new Toronto Marlies/Maple Leafs mask, painted by @sylabrush ... more great photos by @sebastiengervaisphoto and details at

How cool is that? What a touching tribute by Sparks. Here’s hoping that Tobin’s spirit can help lift Sparks and the rest of the Marlies past the Phantoms and all the way to the Calder Cup Final. Sparks has been an absolute revelation with the Marlies this season, going 31-9-1 with a 1.79 goals against average and .936 save percentage.

RIP, Parker. Your spirit will live on forever.

UPDATE: Contrary to our earlier report, Sparks will not be wearing the new backplate on his "CUJO" mask, but rather a new mask entirely. Check it out below:

Check out those awesome ? of @gsparks40 new lid!!! #SylabrushAirbrush**** photo taken by @sebastiengervaisphoto *** Garret is a very creative person he drew himself the "Toronto", "40" and "Sparks40" logos. He wanted to represent the Toronto "Graffiti Alley" on his mask, with some brick wall, and the mummy mural as the main focus. His pads graphics are also painted on each side of his mask for a perfect gear match up!!!
