You have to give new Minnesota Wild general manager Paul Fenton props. The guy comes into a new job, and he is clearly not looking to be a fan favourite right away or to make friends. The new GM was quite blunt yet honest in his first press conference in his new role, stating the he intends to “tweak” the under-achieving roster for a quick turnaround for the season to come.
Hate it or like it, it's happening. Fenton sure got Brian Murphy of Twin Cities wondering what that might involve. However, one thing seems almost certain: Murphy feels Fenton “should have no emotional attachment to Wild players ripe for the trade market such as Nino Niederreiter, Charlie Coyle, Jason Zucker or even Jared Spurgeon", which automatically means that major moves are on the way.
When the announcement was first made, some fans and pundits were afraid for head coach Bruce Boudeau. However, two years remaining on his contract, the veteran head coach seems safe for now, but knows he might have a very different roster to handle after the busy offseason.
“You’re only here to win,” Boudreau told Murphy in an interview. “Whatever Paul thinks will improve the team, that’s what we’re going to do. We’re not going to sit still. If it’s subtracting one to get another, then whatever he decides to do I’m going to run with."
In an interview with Wild insider Michael Russo of The Athletic, Fenton once again stated that trades were on the way.
“I want to make hockey trades. I don’t want to make cap trades. I want to make trades that we see a guy fitting with us and maybe be able to do it quickly. But you never know. You just have to let the process play out.”
Russo also speculated core players such as Niederreiter, Jonas Brodin or Coyle could become trade candidates, and he expects winger Tyler Ennis could be shopped or bought out.
Fenton might have used the word tweak to down play the idea of monster moves on the Wild's roster. However, according to what is being reported by many of the prominent insiders in Minnesota, it seems like quite the overhaul is to be expected ahead of the new season...
