The Nashville Predators sure came out strong at the end of the 2017-18 season as many believed they could make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals with a chance to hoist the prestigious trophy once and for all. They came in as strong contenders, however, head coach Peter Laviolette's club ended up getting eliminated by the Winnipeg Jets in second round of the playoffs last spring, in a disaster of a Game 7 when star goalie Pekka Rinne let the team down...
It seemed unfair, sure, since the best team in the regular season had to play the second best team in the Jets as early as the second round, however, nothing can explain why the Preds held this pathetic home opener ceremony on Tuesday night before their game against the Calgary Flames.
The Predators raised three banners last night, with one that stated “Regular Season Western Conference Champions”... Say what now?
Fans did not waste time to make fun and mock the banner ceremony, as no other team in the National Hockey League as ever tried so hard to celebrate accomplishments in order to hide their failures...
As many fans pointed out on social media, it seemed like the Predators were trying to beef up their resume before a job interview. As if they were saying: "Hey, look at us and all we did, we can be your pick as Stanley Cup champions again!"
As Pete Blackburn pointed out on his Twitter account during the ceremony, the banner is also very confusing because although they had the other two, this one is just makes their season seem less impressive because they were actually the champions of both conferences.
If you're going to beef up stats and facts, at least, get them straight!
The poor players had to stand there looking at the banner before stepping on the ice to face the Flames. Starting goalie Mike Smith made 43 saves to lead the Flames to a 3-0 win over the Predators at Bridgestone Arena, the first loss for the Preds after two wins to start the season.
You can see the game recap in the video atop of the article.
It was certainly not the result they were hoping for to open their home schedule, especially after such a pathetic banner ceremony...
