Will the summer of 2018 be similar to the offseason of 2016? You know, when the Nashville Predators managed to land defenseman P.K. Subban in a blockbuster trade in return for Shea Weber? Can you believe we are back in the same spot where Subban is supposedly on the trade block following some rumored dressing room feud?

Chatter first surfaced when NHL insider Elliotte Friedman was asked by Calgary’s Sportsnet 960 co-host Rhett Warrener if Subban could once again be traded. Warrener wondered if it would be crazy for the Predators to contemplate trading Subban, while making some stunning comments on the defenseman.

“I think he wears out his welcome with guys," said Warrener, as reported by Chris Nichols of FanRag Sports Network. “I think he gets (under) people’s skin in the room. I think his value is huge around the league because he is that talented. Any chance they would consider making that sort of move.”

Last week, TSN Senior hockey reporter Frank Seravelli did mention that he thought Preds GM David Poile could be planning a major move.

“Montreal still may not be over the trade that sent P.K. Subban to Nashville two years ago, but there is lots of chatter that Subban might be on the move again. The Preds will need to commit significant dollars to Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis in each of these next two summers, plus Kevin Fiala this summer.”

Seravelli revealed that Poile might try to make the perfect pitch to the Ottawa Senators for none other than their star defenseman and captain Erik Karlsson.

“The hot rumour has been some kind of deal that involves sending Karlsson to Nashville for Subban. Right now, Subban is owed $36 million, which is a small percentage of what Karlsson will ultimately receive.”

However, the GM himself has had enough of rumors, and revealed to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun that Subban will stay in Nashville. No team has even called him about acquiring the star defenseman. What is it with the star defenseman? Are teams scared off?

No. He is simply a top player for Poile moving forward.

“You see tweets from different places, but, that’s not happening,’’ Poile told The Athletic when asked about a potential Subban trade.

“Nobody has even called me about him,” added Poile. “P.K. played terrific this year. He played really well. He’s a really good player. He’s one of the three candidates for the Norris Trophy. I really don’t know where this comes from.’’

While Poile still has to re-sign captain Roman Josi and fellow defender Ryan Ellis, the GM has made it clear he wants to retain his top four on the blue line and keep pushing for a Stanley Cup.

“I have my parameters of what I can pay so that’s part of the trick is to make it work for everybody,” said Poile. “If we do Ellis this year and then it would be Josi next year around the same time (one year out), those are the two big ones that we have going forward.’’

Maybe now, the trade chatter involving Subban will come to an end...
