We have to see the Detroit Red Wings' improvement this season, despite the fact that a playoff contention doesn't seem in the cards. The team currently sits in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a 17-17-7 record good for 41 points.
They do look better than last season, when they sat eighth in the Atlantic, and now fans can see the excitement that young players like Dylan Larkin (34 points in 41 games), Andreas Athanasiou (17 points in 31 games), and Anthony Mantha (14 goals in 39 games) bring to the game and, most importantly, to the Wings' future.
Prashanth Iyer of The Athletic has given his midseason grades to "each player based on the following criteria:
- My expectations for the player heading into the season
- Their performance in the role they've been handed
- Performance includes their point totals as well as their performance in shot metrics relative to usage"
And only one has gotten a nearly perfect grade... Young Larkin. What a player!
Here is the breakout from Prashanth Iyer:
Now, many fans were shocked that Larkin was not the chosen one in Detroit for this year's All-Star game. Wings defenseman Mike Green has been selected to represent the Red Wings at the 2018 NHL All-Star Game in Tampa. This will be his second All-Star nomination since he joined the league.
Green got a midseason grade of C+ by the way...
Larkin would have been the clear-cut candidate for the Wings, but it looks like he didn’t get the nod due to who was ahead of him. Of course... Tough lineup to crack. But fans were still disappointed to see Green go.
What grade do you give Larkin halfway through the 2017-18 season?
