Philly fans physically attack Crosby following ugly Game 6 elimination for Flyers

This is truly awful. I get that these teams are rivals, but it’s just a sport… c’mon people.

In case you missed it yesterday, the Philadelphia Flyers were officially eliminated from Stanley Cup contention after losing Game 6 of their opening round playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins by a score of 8-5. The hometown Flyers simply weren’t able to keep up with the offensive juggernaut that is the Penguins, not even a three goal, five point performance from emerging superstar Sean Couturier was enough.

Things got ugly during the high-scoring affair, as you might imagine considering the high stakes and the huge rivalry between the two teams. Claude Giroux really ignited things with an ENORMOUS hit on Penguins forward Carl Hagelin in the second period.

Check this out:

WHAMMO! That’s big, clean body check from the Flyers captain that left Hagelin bloodied and woozy. Teammate Phil Kessel would try to engage with Giroux after, but only ended up earning himself a roughing minor for his trouble.

Later in the game, Penguins defenseman Kris Letang somehow, someway got away with a blatant trip on Couturier before setting up teammate Jake Guentzel for the third of his four goals on the evening.

Check it out:

This is the play that absolutely set off Flyers fans. Here’s another look at it:

Look… it’s the Stanley Cup Playoffs and all and I get that referees want to “let the boys play”, but that’s about as blatant as a trip as you’ll see in the NHL. And for those calling out Couturier for a dive, just look at how his body hits the ice. There’s no way anyone takes a dive and ends up falling to the ice that way… this is clearly just a case of a blown call from the on ice officials. Brutal.

As you might expect, the Philly faithful did not take kindly to the non-call and they let the refs know it, chanting “REF, YOU SUCK! REF, YOU SUCK!” for the duration of the third period. In the waning moments of the game, play had to be called dead because fans had thrown too much debris and trash onto the ice.

Penguins superstar captain Sidney Crosby was the personal target of Philly fans and narrowly avoided getting pelted with full beer cans. His response however, was pretty perfect.

Spoken like a true hockey player. All kidding aside though, this is reprehensible behavior that he cannot condone. It’s all fun and games to cheer on your team and boo the opposition, but throwing a full beer can at someone’s head is tantamount to assault. Come on, Philly… you’re better than this.
