Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion might still be holding on to the hopes of clinching a playoff berth, but let's be honest, it seems almost impossible.
What isn't impossible : trade options in Ottawa. There have been plenty of phone calls from interested teams to investigate about forwards Mike Hoffman, Zack Smith and Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and a few teams have called about defenseman Cody Ceci. The Boston Bruins have been listening and now, could be ready to make a move.
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Bruins are investigating the possibility of trading for Hoffman, as he explained Friday on Calgary's Sportsnet 960.
“Boston has got a lot of young players coming,” said Friedman. “I think a lot of people thought they were a year away. I think they’re sniffing around the Hoffman thing too."
However, one major problem stands in the way of making such a deal with the Senators. The Canadian team is hoping to build a stronger future, and is expected to be asking for draft picks, prospects and young players in return for Hoffman, or other trade targets.
There's the problem for Boston. But the team could manage a move.
“I don’t think they want to deal any of their young guys, especially not the ones that are there already who are becoming part of the core of the team. But if they want to make a move, they’ve got a lot of good young players. Not only there, but lower.
“They get killed all the time for not taking Barzal or not taking Kyle Connor that year they had three picks in a row, but at least DeBrusk is turning out to be a player and Zboril people still think has a chance to be a player. So it’s not quite as egregious, even though they get made fun of a lot.”
The Bruins are going to be watched as the trade deadline nears. Hoffman, who has a modified no-trade clause through which he can list 10 teams to which he does not want to be dealt, might be interested to go to Boston.
We will have to keep an eye out.
