On Thursday another step toward putting another NHL team in the Pacific Northwest after the group led by billionaire David Bonderman and filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer submitted an expansion application to the league for a team in Seattle in February was underway. The Los Angeles-based Oak View Group revealed on Twitter that it reached its initial goal of 10,000 deposits in 12 minutes. and finally received more than 25,000 deposits for season tickets through a ticket drive.
It seems more and more certain that Seattle will get its hockey club, the 32nd team in the league. So much that now hockey experts are having fun and predicting what the expansion draft would look like, and finally offering a sneak peek at the potential roster of the newest team in the NHL. Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News established some rules and reminded us of important details to the potential mock draft. Here they are as he wrote them down in his latest column:
"First, Vegas selected a lot of players on the final years of contracts, assuming they could trade the "rentals" at the deadline. I did a lot of that here.
Second, the Golden Knights grabbed underused talents such as William Karlsson from Columbus and Erik Haula from Minnesota. There were trades linked to that (like Vegas taking on David Clarkson's deal from the Jackets in exchange for two high draft picks), but I'm just going to make the picks for now. I will, however, indicate when Seattle picks a player that helps another team, assuming there will be a trade for surplus draft picks to go with it.
Third, I won't extend unrestricted free agents, but I will assume RFA extensions. So my veteran pool is limited to guys on long-term deals.
Fourth, I'm taking some liberties on no-trade clauses, because we saw exceptions with Vegas (Marc-Andre Fleury), but not many.
Finally, keep in mind this draft happens in a few years and skills degrade over time. So yes, there are some big names here, but they won't necessarily be the same players by then."
Are you ready? Imagine these players in a new uniform, because with a historic ticket sale taking place yesterday, it seems more and more possible that the NHL will have a new expansion team. Sooner rather than later. Here is Kennedy's mock draft as posted on The Hockey News website:
