It was a night to remember for Toronto Maple Leafs rookies Travis Dermott and Justin Holl. The two defencemen  each scored their first NHL goals last night in a 5-0 rout over the New York Islanders.

Both guys were highlight reel material and their Fathers were even in attendance, as part of the team’s annual Father’s Trip, to join in the celebration. Indeed, it was a perfect night for the young blue liners.

“You can’t write it up any more perfect,” Dermott said. “Hollsy as my defensive partner and all this coming together.”

There's a lot to get into, but let's jump straight to the goods: the goals by Dermott and Holl.

Dermott blew the game wide open with his first career goal, putting the Leafs up 4-0. The blue liner forced the puck over for in the Isles zone, made a quick pass to William Nylander and headed to the net. Nylander made no mistake in finding Dermott in front:

As great as the goal was, Dermott reaction is even better:

The reaction from Dermott's father might be the best of all though:

Auston Matthews joined the on-ice celebration, but not before grabbing the puck out of the back of the net for Dermott:

That's real leadership. Good on you, Auston.

Now onto Holl's first career goal. The 26-year-old defenceman was an emergency recall before the game when it was determined that veteran Roman Polak would not be able to play due to a viral infection. Leafs head coach Mike Babcock informed Holl that he'd be playing on a defensive pairing with Dermott, his usual partner with the AHL's Toronto Marlies. The reunion proved to be a genius move by the Leafs' bench boss.

If Dermott's first NHL goal was the result of hard work and going to the net, Holl's was just pure skill. The smooth skating defenceman came lumbering down the right-wing and fired a beautiful shot through the legs of Islanders netminder Thomas Greiss.

It was an absolute beauty, worth seeing from another angle:

Holl's goal made the score 5-0 Leafs and pretty much sunk any chances of an Islanders comeback. The Leafs would hold on and goaltender Frederik Andersen would earn the shutout. Afterwards though, it was Dermott and Holl who earned all the praise in the Leafs' victory.

All in all, QUITE a night at the ACC last night. Congrats, boys!
