Drew Doughty or Erik Karlsson? It's the 'to be or not to be' question for the Toronto Maple Leafs this year and next, as both have a single year left on their respective deals and will be the two most coveted free agents should they hit the open market.
Michael Landsberg had Darren Dreger on TSN 1050 this morning to discuss the interest the Leafs would have in these two superstar defensemen, asking which one they will be more likely to pursue, assuming they do entertain offers from other teams.
"I think it would be Doughty," Dreger said.
"If he were to get to market, I gotta believe Toronto would at least kick tires. The cap hit would be tremendous, so it may not be the perfect scenario for the Maple Leafs, but I'm sure they would inquire.
"He has Stanley Cup experience. And it's how he plays the game. Drew Doughty has committed to the balance of being a Norris Trophy winning defenseman. He's as good defensively as he is offensively."
Dreger doesn't knock Karlsson as a good option for Toronto. He'd be fantastic for anyone. And again, not to knock Karlsson, but the belief is that Doughty is a more well-rounded defenseman, and with his connection to Mike Babcock through Team Canada events, the fit would just be a bit better.
What do you think? Who would you want most between the two?
