By all accounts, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green had a blast at this past weekend’s NHL All-Star Game festivities. “We’ve just been hanging out, trying to relax and enjoy ourselves,” said Green in discussion with The Athletic’s Craig Custance.
Green knows that his time might be coming to an end in Detroit and he’s just trying to take it all in stride. He’s heard the trade rumors… he’s smart enough to look around the NHL and know that he’s a hot commodity on the trade market. Point-producing, right-shooting defensemen on expiring contracts don’t exactly grow on trees, so you can count on Green generating huge interest on the trade market.
“I’m always open-minded,” said Green when asked about a trade scenario. “I never close my mind to opportunity. I love it there. It’s a great organization. It’s been a great learning experience as a player and as a person. If anything does happen, I’m grateful for my time there.”
Interestingly enough, it wasn’t just the media who were grilling Green for information this past weekend. Green’s fellow All-Stars also spent a bit of time trying to woo him and impact his decision making.
Interesting. Now we want to know who Green was talking to! Multiple reports have linked the smooth skating, puck moving blue liner to the Toronto Maple Leafs and his former team the Washington Capitals.
Wherever Green ends up, it’ll be interesting to hear whether or not these “negotiations” played a part in his decision making or not. It’s also worth noting that Green has a limited no-trade contract so he does have some say on his future, but ultimately it comes down to GM Ken Holland and the deal that he’s able to drum up. Stay tuned, Wings fans.
