The Hockey News writer Sam McCaig released his "report card" for NHL teams through the first "semester" of the season, that is, the first 30 or so games of the year, leading into the holiday break.
McCaig gave the Pittsburgh Penguins an unfavorable C- review, alluding to the fact that they need to start worrying about not making the playoffs.
The Penguins have been struggling this season - unable to rely on their bottom six to provide offense. Their defense hasn't been consistent this season either, with their best defenseman in Kris Letang struggling to find his groove.
While a C- is probably a harsh review for the two-time champs, McCaig is somewhat echoing the perception of the Penguins this year - a team that looks gassed and needs a bit of a reboot.
Whether that starts with a trade for fresh legs, or some new strategies from Mike Sullivan, we don't know, but one thing's for sure, the Penguins haven't lived up to expectations after securing a second consecutive Stanley Cup earlier this year and have their work cut out for them if they want to challenge for the mythical three-peat.
