Report: Karlsson in negotiations with rival GM

It’s happening… it’s FINALLY happening.

According to a report from Larry Brooks of The New York Post, Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson is done in the nation’s capital. Brooks reported yesterday afternoon that, while the Sens have submitted a contract extension offer to Karlsson, they have also granted permission for the superstar defenseman to negotiate a contract extension with any team hoping to acquire him via trade.

Senators have given interested teams permission to talk contract extension with Karlsson. Sounds as if he is looking for Doughty deal (8x11)

More interestingly, TSN insider Travis Yost reports that Karlsson has personally been in touch with Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee:

“They also put Karlsson personally in touch with GMGM.”

Vegas, as we know, has been linked to Karlsson since we first got word that he could be in play on the trade market. It’s believed that the Senators and the Golden Knights had a deal in place for Karlsson at the 2018 NHL Trade Deadline, but things fell apart in the minutes leading up to the deadline. The rumored trade would have seen Karlsson and teammate Bobby Ryan head to Vegas in exchange for two first round draft picks and an unnamed top prospect.

“They were in on Karlsson. They made a pitch at the last minute,” said Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman just after the deadline passed. “I think it was potentially two first-round picks. I think Ottawa would have had the choice of one of their top prospects. And maybe another conditional pick, depending on whether or not Vegas signed him. I think that was kind of the backbone of the offer. And Ottawa decided not to.”

It’s believed that Senators GM Pierre Dorion was insistent on including 2017 6th overall draft choice Cody Glass in the deal and that proved to be too much for McPhee and the Golden Knights. You wonder now, with a shift in the market and with the Golden Knights’ needs evolving, whether or not things are different. Could the two sides come to an agreement now?

If not, where does Karlsson end up? He’s been linked to the Tampa Bay Lightning in trade reports, as well and would certainly look good alongside fellow Swedish blue liner and 2018 Norris Trophy winner Victor Hedman.
