After months of rumors and speculation, we may FINALLY see a resolution to the Erik Karlsson situation for the Ottawa Senators.

During an appearance on Toronto radio station TSN 1050 yesterday, NHL insider Darren Dreger blew the doors off the Karlsson rumors, saying that Karlsson could be traded “within a day or two.” Say what!?

Check it out:

“I can tell you this - everything is pointing to Erik Karlsson being moved by the Ottawa Senators within a day or two. I mean, that’s our sense.”

Please, oh please, oh please be right for once, Dreger…

There’s no doubt that Karlsson trade talks have picked up this week, likely because the Senators are set to open training camp on Friday and Karlsson’s presence alone will undoubtedly be a distraction. So… if Karlsson is traded this week, where is he headed?

Are the Tampa Bay Lightning still in the race? Or did yesterday’s news that GM Steve Yzerman is stepping down change things? More from Dreger:

“Tampa Bay certainly has been in that mix. In light of the manager change, is it conceivable that BriseBois could put Yzerman’s deal back on the table and maybe sweeten it to some degree? Yeah, I think it’s conceivable.”

Also, if we’ve learned nothing else in the past calendar year… never EVER count out the Vegas Golden Knights:

“I look at Vegas. Vegas to me still seems like a likely destination. Vegas has boatloads of cap space. They may not want to part with the pieces. I think that if George McPhee had been willing to throw Shea Theodore into the mix at the trade deadline, Erik Karlsson probably would have been moved at that point to the Vegas Golden Knights.“

The Dallas Stars, who also happen to be wrestling with a pending free agent superstar in Tyler Seguin, are reportedly also in the mix to land Karlsson:

“I thought that was the case with the Dallas Stars earlier this morning, but a Stars’ source told me it’s quiet on that front. “

Regardless of whether or not Karlsson ends up being traded this week, it’s clear that there’s real interest out there on the trade market. It’s likely that Sens GM Pierre Dorion has an offer sitting on his lap… now it’s just a question of whether or not he’s ready to make a deal. Stay tuned. Senators training camp opens Friday. The countdown is on.
