The Edmonton Oilers suffered a massive blow on Friday when it was announced that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would be sidelined for at least 5 to 6 weeks with a cracked ribs.
It may or may not have an impact on Peter Chiarelli's trade plans. If his plan was to trade Nugent-Hopkins while his value is highest, this injury could hinder that kind of deal going down, although most people probably don't want him traded anyway.
The 5-6 week timeline puts him on schedule to be healthy right as the trade deadline hits, so perhaps a team takes a chance anyways.
Regardless of that, the Oilers reportedly have interest in two players who are among the most likely to be traded this year, and both are from the Ottawa Senators.
It's already been mentioned as a possibility that Edmonton has interest in bringing Mike Hoffman in, and while there are no explicit trade offers leaked, Elliotte Friedman mentioned on a radio hit recently that Drake Caggiula may have been a name that has come up in those discussions. It's clear, however, that it would take much more to land one of the more lethal snipers in the National Hockey League.
Hoffman is having a down year, like the rest of his team, with only 11 goals and 29 points to his name after 43 games. He's been good for over 25 goals for the last 3 seasons, and setting a career high in points last year with 61.
He takes a shade under $5.2 million off the cap for 2 more years after this season.
The other name that the Oilers are linked to according to a report from The Fourth Period, is Dion Phaneuf. This may not please Oilers fans too much, especially if they think back to his days with the Calgary Flames.
Despite that, he's past his prime, and carries a heavy contract. His $7 million cap hit lasts for 3 more seasons beyond this one.
Despite that awful contract, the top insiders are reporting that there is variable interest in him from teams around the league, much to our surprise.
According to The Fourth Period, "Phaneuf has played well for the Senators since joining their squad and is simply a potential casualty of a team looking to save some money. He has a 12-team trade list, and talks have already begun." They add that the Los Angeles Kings are another team interested in his services.
Any deal for Phaneuf would have to have salary retained on Ottawa's end, unless they take a significant chunk of unwanted salary back in this deal.
Hoffman and Phaneuf are 5th and 7th respectively on TFP's top 30 trade targets. Would you deal for either of these two guys, and if so, what's your offer?
