This past weekend, Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic reported that unrestricted free agent forward Patrick Maroon had agreed to terms on a new contract with the St. Louis Blues.
Rutherford provided no official word yet on the length or term of Maroon’s new deal, but did say that the Blues were expected to announce those details Sunday afternoon. That never happened and now people are wondering… what the heck is going on? Did he sign with the Blues or not?
Rutherford issued another report late last night with an update on the situation:
Maroon update: Agent Ben Hankinson tells The Athletic that no decision is expected tonight, and that while the Blues remain a “strong option,” there are other teams still in the mix. #stlblues
Further to that report, Lou Korac of NHL.com reported that indeed Maroon has agreed to terms with the Blues and that the announcement should come at some point yesterday.
Here’s what I got: told that Patrick Maroon to [#stlblues](https://twitter.com/hashtag/stlblues?src=hash) has been finalized, could be announced Monday & expected to be for one-year, $1.7 million & that Blues and Maroon will entertain a contract extension when first allowed in January. Looks like Oakville native is coming home.
Again… no deal. Now a report from Blues beat writer Jim Thomas is shedding light on all the misinformation. Thomas asserts that an agent change on Maroon’s part is delaying proceedings and has seemingly stalled negotiations with the Blues.
Check it out:
Patrick Maroon, the free-agent forward from Oakville in south St. Louis County, changed agents a few days ago and that may be delaying his decision on a new team — if only for a few days — while Maroon’s new representative shops around for new offers.
Interesting. Thomas makes it sound like Maroon simply wasn’t happy with the offers on the table for him, so he elected to make a change in representation while in the middle of negotiations.
It remains to be seen how this all plays out, but regardless it’s surprising to see Maroon still on the open market. The 30 year old forward scored 17 goals and 43 points in 74 games split between the Edmonton Oilers and New Jersey Devils in 2018-19. He also managed 27 goals just a season prior.
It’s worth noting that Maroon is coming off offseason back surgery, but he’s expected to make a full recovery in time for Blues training camp in September. The 6 foot 3, 225 pound winger could add some size and grit to a team’s forward unit, providing he can come to terms.
