Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan had an update for reporters on the health of injured defenseman Justin Schultz ahead of tonight’s pivotal divisional matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
While it’s certainly encouraging to hear that Schultz is making “significant progress”, the team NEEDS him back in the lineup ASAP. The struggling Penguins have dropped four of their last five games, including two to the lowly Colorado Avalanche. Schultz plays big minutes in all situations for the Penguins and it’s clear that they team is missing him dearly.
The 27-year-old blue liner has played just 23 games for the Penguins this season, scoring two goals and 10 points. Last season, Schultz established himself as a dominating offensive presence, picking up a career high 12 goals and 51 points. If team is going to turn things around, they’ll need Schultz back in the lineup… and in a hurry!
