As reported earlier this afternoon, Travis Dermott was recalled from the Toronto Marlies, with Martin Marincin being sent back down after a brief stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Athletic reporter James Mirtle believes this was Marincin's last chance at winning over Mike Babcock.
Marincin only played 2 games in his call-up following Nikita Zaitsev's injury - he was a regular healthy scratch in favour of Connor Carrick and Roman Polak.
Dermott now replaces Marincin as the 7th defenseman, and may even get to make his NHL debut shortly. As for Marincin, his poor play last season, particularly in the playoffs, may have turned Babcock off from using him anymore, with his future likely done in Toronto, at the NHL level at any rate.
Marincin's contract expires at the conclusion of this season, at which point he will be a restricted free agent. It will be interesting to see if he gets traded before then, or if not - whether or not he gets qualified for another contract with Toronto.
